What is Citrulline?

Since the nitric oxide craze began roughly ten years ago, supplement makers have been looking for ways to improve their NO supplements to gain an advantage over the competition. With huge proprietary blends of herbs and other ingredients, supplement makers are all claiming to have the best upgrade nitric oxide formulas. One ingredient that seems to be a staple in these supplements is the amino acid citrulline.

Citrulline is a non-essential amino acid, meaning that the body can manufacture it on its own. Citrulline gets its name from the Latin word for watermelon, citrullus, because it was first isolated from this fruit. One of the main functions of citrulline is to remove ammonia from the body by converting it to urine.

For performance and athletic purposes, citrulline is used to enhance the effects of both creatine and arginine. Creatine is used to enhance anaerobic exercise while citrulline may aid in aerobic performance. The combination of the two ideally would promote a greater overall performance of both strength and endurance.

With arginine, citrulline may actually extend the life of the benefits brought on by arginine supplementation. Arginine has a wide variety of benefits, including increased nitric oxide production, improving blood pressure and aiding in erectile dysfunction. Citrulline actually converts to arginine in the body via the urea process. Some reports claim that supplementing with citrulline may be more beneficial at raising arginine blood levels due to its conversion.

Combining arginine with citrulline can have tremendous positive effects. The initial boost of arginine by itself, combined with the conversion of citrulline to arginine should promote greater nitric oxide blood levels than taking either amino acid alone. By adding this amino acid, or combination of amino acids, to your supplement plan, you may be able to smash through any training plateaus that are keeping you from reaching your physique goals.
