What is 5-HTP?

Also known as 5-hydroxytryptophan, 5-HTP is an amino acid that is a precursor to the brain chemical serotonin. 5-HTP has been used for years in the treatments of:
• Insomnia
• Anxiety
• Seasonal Affective Disorder
• Migraines
• Depression

Today’s average American diet and lifestyle has resulted in an abundance of stress due to poor diet and lack of exercise. This type of living has produced individuals with lowered serotonin levels, causing a whole host of physical and mental problems. These ailments can be treated by simply elevating their natural serotonin levels, and this can be done with supplemental 5-HTP.

5-HTP has been clinically tested as an effective treatment for depression. Average daily doses of 200mg of 5-HTP were shown to significantly improve the symptoms those suffering from depression and some were even able to make a full recovery. 5-HTP has also been shown to be slightly better in treating depression than typical prescription anti-depressants like Zoloft, Paxil and Prozac. This is very welcome news for people suffering from depression, but do not want to rely on drugs to help them.

5-HTP has also been shown to be superior over regular tryptophan because it is one step closer to serotonin. Regular tryptophan is also produced with the help of the fermentation of bacteria. This process alone makes 5-HTP a safer overall choice, because it is isolated from a seed of an African plant, the Griffonia simplicifolia.

5-HTP is a safe, natural alternative to prescription medication, and is non-habit forming. For those individuals suffering from depression, anxiety or insomnia, 5-HTP can be a great way to help themselves physically and mentally to get out of their funk.
