The Importance of Antioxidants

Flu season is upon us once again, and that means its time to beef-up your immune system defenses to stave of sickness. Small tasks like washing your hands, avoiding people who are already sick and proper nutrition are all smart ways to keep yourself clear of cold and flu germs. One additional way to keep yourself healthy this flu season is with the power of antioxidants.

Antioxidants are important to health and wellness because they neutralize toxic free radicals, which are molecules that can wreak havoc on the body from the inside, on a microscopic level. Free radicals are unstable molecules that are missing an electron. In order to become stable, they will steal an electron from a neighboring molecule, and thus turning that molecule unstable, setting off a chain reaction that is very damaging to the body on a cellular level. Antioxidants have the unique ability to donate an electron to the free radical, without becoming unstable themselves and thus ending the chain reaction.

Free radicals can be brought on by everyday stress like work, kids and traffic, or also additional factors like excessive drinking, smoking and even working out. Not supplementing with antioxidants allows these toxic molecules to continue their rampage throughout your body, prolonging illness and sapping your body of vital energy.

Supplementing with antioxidants should not be limited to the cold and flu season. As stated, everyday stresses can bring about free radical damage, and even something as beneficial as exercise allows these molecules to run rampant throughout the body. Protecting your body with the simple but powerful array of antioxidants can do wonders for keeping you happy and healthy all year long.
