Beta-Alanine

Beta-Alanine promotes high intramuscular carnosine concentrations. Carnosine is a dipeptide of the amino acids beta-alanine and histidine and is highly concentrated in muscle and brain tissues and serves to maintain pH levels that decrease muscular performance when unregulated. Carnosine effectively blocks the process of Glycolysis which is responsible for producing lactic acid that lowers the pH. Another pH reducing agent is the release of H+ ions through not only glycolysis, but through the ATP cycle furthering the drop in pH resulting in rapid muscular performance decline. Carnosine mitigates this fall in muscular pH by absorbing hydrogen ions released at an increased rate during exercise and glycolysis thereby stabilizing the pH responsible for muscular endurance.
